The idiocy of "Click Here"

Once upon a time there was a HTML writers' guide that said "make it read like a printed page"; make hyperlinks the same way you'd make references to other printed works. Nowadays 3 times out of 4 the words under a hyperlink will be "click here". Have you ever heard anything more inane?

You're reading a web page, and you come to some underlined text, which by the convention of your browser means it's a hyperlink.
